Workshop for Interviewers 2024
"Faces of the Makin Terang Programme at the Worker Organising Base"
From May 6-8, 2024, 14 interviewers from the Makin Terang programme gathered in Jakarta for a workshop. Five of these interviewers were women, aiming to reach more female respondents, who are the majority in the garment, textile, and footwear sectors (TGSL).
The interviewers are members of union partners, including SPN, Garteks KSBSI, TSK SPSI, GSBI, and TSK KSPSI. They collect data and help organise unions in various TGSL factories. To perform effectively, they need training to share experiences, challenges, and mitigations.
Day One: May 6, 2024
The day began with introductions, an overview of the workshop, and a presentation on the Makin Terang Programme: Improving Work and Worker Representation in Indonesia. Highlights from 2023, including survey results, collective bargaining agreements, and organising efforts, were shared.
In the afternoon, Dela Feby from Gajimu.com led a reflection session on challenges in the garment industry, national industrial zones, global conditions, and their relevance to the programme.
Syaukani Ichsan from TURC and Rita from FNV Mondiaal helped participants identify key actors and their roles in increasing union membership and promoting gender mainstreaming in Indonesia.
Day Two: May 7, 2024
The day started with a review of the first day's material by Biko from TURC. Interviewers then shared their experiences in data collection. Sessions included DecentWorkCheck by an SPN interviewer, WorkersPriorityPoll (WPP) by a Garteks KSBSI interviewer, and factory info and collective bargaining data by a TSK SPSI interviewer.
The TURC team guided participants through simulations to build trust and communicate with respondents. In the afternoon, the Gajimu team helped map out target factories for the 2024 survey and discussed coordination among all levels to support the Makin Terang programme.
Day Three: May 8, 2024
The final day began with Biko reviewing key points from the previous day. The Gajimu.com team then discussed the data generated by the Makin Terang programme. Fifi led a session on navigating Gajimu.com and Gajimu/garment, teaching interviewers to read and utilise published survey results, including the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) database.
Andi and Fakhri explained data visualisation on Gajimu.com. Participants worked in groups to interpret and utilise visual data for union negotiations and organising. Rita Olivia from FNV Mondiaal led a discussion on revitalising unions and gender strategies, emphasising the importance of making unions more responsive to the needs of female and young workers.
.
To conclude, Andina from Gajimu.com detailed three Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the Makin Terang programme: DecentWorkCheck, WorkersPriorityPoll, and Protection and Security Management. She also explained the programme's activity schedule. Interviewers then created their work schedules, ready to begin activities after the workshop. The interviewers left with high spirits to work on the Makin Terang programme!
