Academy of Women Workers, Phase 2.

Improving the Negotiating Capacity of Women Workers in the Textile, Garment, and Footwear Industry Jakarta, 10-12 June 2022

Data Academy is back to hold the event of the Academy of Women Workers. In 2021  Academy of Women Worker participants received basic knowledge of gender and women's leadership in trade union organizations, this time they were given information and knowledge related to labor law, the right to collective bargaining, and the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). In particular, the CBA is based gender-responsive and protects women workers from various violence and harassment in the world of work.

The second of the Academy of Women Workers was attended by 28 alumni from the first event. All of them are female workers and managers of trade unions in their workplaces. They come from 15 factories in the Textile Garment Footwear sector in Jakarta, West Java, Banten, and Central Java, namely: PT. Panggung Jaya Indah Textile, PT. Pertiwi Indomas, PT Ciptagria Mutiara Busana, PT. Ching Luh Indonesia, PT. Wiska, PT. Pouchen Indonesia, PT. Bintang Indokarya Gemilang, PT Perdana First Garment, PT Quty Karunia, PT Tuntex Garmen Indonesia, PT. Samkyung Jaya Garment, PT. Ungaran Sari Garment, PT. Spinmill Indah Industri, PT. MOD Indo, PT. Chang Shin Indonesia.

At the beginning of the activities, participants were invited to reflect on the changes and progress they felt in themselves, their environment, workplace, and organization after participating in the Academy of Women Workers. The majority felt a shift in their perspective in seeing their role as women in various aspects of life.

This awareness also encourages them to be more confident. Not a few of them have also made various efforts to defend cases of violence against women in the workplace. Equally important, although only a few of them managed to sit on the CBA negotiating team in the company, they were often asked for input on the CBA articles that could protect women workers.

Responding to these needs, the second Academy of Women Workers is devoted to providing knowledge to CBA and building the capacity to form laws through CBA. Moreover, it is known that CBA negotiations are currently progressing in several of the factories involved.

The method used in the second Academy of Women Workers is a learning method at the CBA Data Academy workshop, where participants have introduced instruments that can help them determine the urgency, support, and challenges of the CBA issue to be negotiated.

Then the participants were introduced to the Problem Inventory List that can make it easier to design the contents of the articles in the CBA. As a learning material, the articles of the CBA that are trying to be developed include the protection of maternity rights, Occupational Health and Safety protection for female workers, and elimination of discrimination and sexual violence.

To encourage their leadership, the Academy of Women Workers was also attended by spokesperson workers from the Indonesian Homeworkers Network (JPRI). This session consisted of exchanging stories about the experiences of homeworkers organising themselves and negotiating their rights with employers.
